I am converting a 2003 Mercedes Sprinter van with 6 speed Sprintshift gear box to a motor home and am considering installing a Smart Start BMS 1215. As all mechanics and automatic gearbox are computer programmed and the makers warn agaisnt outside electronic interference, I am somewhat concerned about installing the BMS 1215. Does anyone have any advice on this? |

Hi Klaas,
Thanks for your post. Firstly the BMS1215 has passed EMC compliance, and through our testing has not been found to interfere with other electronics. The BMS connects to the vehicle battery only and does not directly interface to any other part of the vehicles electronics where communication lines are present. Because the charger connection to the vehicle is a DC line, it is unlikely to interfere with communication lines. Also, if the gearbox and mechanics are manufactured in Europe then they also should comply to EMI standards as well meaning they should not be susceptible to interference from EMC compliant devices. As long as wiring is placed in a considered way, you should not have a problem with interference with any system. eg -where possible place added wiring away from other lines in the vehicle-if going past other wires, cross them at right angles -run wires along the chassis -run power and ground wires from the main battery together (eg figure 8 cable) I suggest testing once installed if there is any sign of a problem then do not drive the vehicle until the source of the problem has been identified and removed. Another point to consider is what other equipment you plan to use in this vehicle. For example, if you plan to use a CB radio or mobile phone handsfree kit (products both designed to radiate electromagnetic energy), these would be a far more likely source of interference. We have had customers install our BMS into a Mercedes Sprinter without a problem however, if you are still unsure the best bet would be to contact a qualified auto electrician or motorhome electronics installer and ask their opinion on your situation. |
