Start Assist on older SBI12

I am hoping to add a 'start assist' button to my existing SBI12 installation. I believe the SBI12 I am using is the older model and the only instructions I have regarding the use of the blue wire are as follows;

Blue Wire on solenoid MUST be connected. 1.) Wire direct to ignition. Will cut in with key on and voltage above 13.6V. Will cut out with key off or When voltage is 12.2V. 2.) Wire direct to accessories. Will cut in with key on and voltage above 13.6V. Will cut out with key off or When voltage is 12.2V. 3.) Wire direct to start battery. Will cut in when voltage is above 13.6V. Will cut out when voltage is below 12.2V.

My existing install is as per 3.) above.
How should I wire in a "Start Assist" override?
Thank you
Nully
permalink Hi Adrian,

Wiring direct to ignition is the best option out of the above stated, however it will not give you a "Start Assist" feature, what it would do is engage the solenoid anytime ignition is active. This means your voltage thresholds and the operation of the SBI itself will be overridden. Please note that when using the override wire, the voltage sensing operation does not occur, anything over about 11V will engage the solenoid.

For a 'Start Assist' feature it is recommended that the blue wire be connected to the starter motor/solenoid as this will only override the SBI operation whilst cranking. We actually have a Knowledge Base article on this particular install. This article can be found here.

Thanks Dylan, so can I assume that these instructions are actually someone's incorrect interpretation of the blue wire options?

In that case...Option "3.)" should actually apply if the blue wire is not connected at all.

Was there an older model that did not work the same as the latest model schematic suggests?

If the blue wire options have not changed over the years, can I safely wire in an over-ride button and remote indicator LED as suggested in the newest model instructions?

Thanks again
permalink Hi Adrian,

Yes, these instructions are someones incorrect interpretation of the wiring instructions for our SBI. If you look closely at the footer at the bottom of the instructions on your email it actually says sidewinder.com.au, this is where the instructions came from. These instructions are not authorised by Redarc Electronics.

Yes, option 3 should apply if the blue wire is not connected.

Yes, you should be able to wire up an indicator LED and an override button as per the newest model instructions suggest.

If you require any further explanation, please do not hesitate to contact me.
